The annual 4-H Rice and Sweet Potato Cookery Contest is scheduled for Wednesday, January 8, 2014. This contest is sponsored by the Evangeline Parish Rice Growers Association, E & L Produce and the LSU AgCenter.
The cookery contest will be held at the Ville Platte Civic Center with entries being accepted between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. All Evangeline Parish 4-H members, regardless of projects selected, are eligible to participate. 4-H’ers may enter one dish in each contest category.
The Rice Contest categories are: Rice Main Dish, Rice Side Dish and Rice Dessert. The rice dish must contain a minimum of at least one cup of cooked rice or rice product. Only half of the dish should be exhibited on a disposable container. Pre-registration is not required for this cookery contest.
The Sweet Potato Contest categories are: Dessert and Other Sweet Potato Dishes. The sweet potato dish must contain a minimum of one cup fresh, frozen or canned sweet potatoes. Only half of the dish should be exhibited on a disposable container. Pre-registration is not required for this cookery contest
Contestants must submit a copy of the contest recipe, written in correct form, with the dish. Dishes must be brought to the Ville Platte Civic Center in a cold state ready for judging.
All entries will receive a participation ribbon. The Over-All Rice Winner will receive a medal and will represent Evangeline Parish in the Regional Cookery Contest held in Crowley in April of 2014. The top five dishes in each Sweet Potato category will receive a cash award. All participants will receive a ribbon and the first place dish will represent the parish in the Regional Contest, which will be held in Alexandria in March of 2014.
