The 4-H Egg, Poultry and Pecan Contests are scheduled for Monday, November 25. These contests are sponsored by Paul’s Meat Market and Grocery, Jack Miller’s Food Products and Evangeline Feed & Seed.
These cookery contests will be held in the Sacred Heart Elementary Gymnasium with entries being accepted between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. All Evangeline Parish 4-H members, regardless of projects selected, are eligible to participate. 4-H’ers may enter one dish in each division.
Contestants must submit a copy of the contest recipe, written in correct form, with the dish. The dish must be exhibited cold to the touch. Bring only half the dish to the contest in a throw away container.
The Egg Contest categories are: Appetizer/Salad, Main Dish and Dessert. The egg dish must utilize a minimum of four eggs. No raw eggs are allowed in the final product. All eggs must be cooked.
The Poultry Contest categories are: Chicken and Processed Poultry Products. In the chicken division, the dish must contain a minimum of two pounds bone-in chicken or one pound deboned chicken meat. In the processed poultry products division, a dish should include a minimum of 12 ounces of processed poultry products. These are poultry meats which have undergone special processing, such as marinating, breading, seasoning, reshaped and formed products. All dishes containing any turkey item should be entered in this division.
The Pecan Contest requires that the pecan dish contain at least one cup of pecans. The dish must use a minimum of one cup of pecans or pecan product. The contest categories are: Candy, Desserts and Other Pecan Dishes.
Specific guidelines for the Egg, Poultry and Pecan Contests were included with the “4-H Clover Patch” given to all 4-H’ers during the November club meetings. These guidelines are also available from the 4-H office.
All entries in the Egg, Poultry and Pecan contests will receive a blue, red or white ribbon. The parish winner in each contest category will represent Evangeline Parish in the area cookery competition, which will be held in Alexandria in March of 2014.
All contest participants are requested to enter the Sacred Heart Elementary campus through the back gate and parking area and go directly to the gymnasium.
